Two decades after the end of a genocidal civil war in Guatemala that lasted more than three decades (from 1960-1996) and resulted in the disappearance and death of more than 200,000 indigenous Mayas, many are still suffering. Older women who were widowed by the war are malnourished and some of them lack very basic subsistence and health resources. Children, too, are in need.

Inspired by Bishop Peter Orlando who has worked for nearly five decades in Latin America, the Mission San Pedro team has made a commitment to doing sustainable, transformative work in the Tzutujil Maya village of San Pedro la Laguna. We are committed to helping them not just in the short term but for a long time to come.

For many of the older widows and some of the young children nutrition is a big issue. With monthly sponsorship, healthy food such as eggs for protein and fresh fruits and vegetables, medicines, and other essentials are provided to individual widows. We are committed to maintaining sustainable food resources with the organic Widows’ Garden, nestled against the lake. Medical mission teams have visited the widows and provided direct care to those in need. Prior to project implementation, a complete community-based public health assessment was conducted to inform Mission San Pedro of comprehensive public health needs.

Our Mission

To collaborate with Guatemalan partners to improve the lives of those most in need in the indigenous Tzutujil Maya community of San Pedro la Laguna.

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.
