The Art of Mariano Gonzalez Chavajay and VICENTA PUZUL gonzalez

About the Artists

Mariano Gonzalez Chavajay is the most accomplished and well-known Tzutujil Maya artist and a native of San Pedro la Laguna. Oil painting has been a central part of his life since childhood: his grandfather was the first Tzutuhil artist, Rafael Gonzalez y Gonzalez.Mariano’s paintings are in high demand and have been shown in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and elsewhere.

In 1992, to accelerate the output of his work, Mariano trained his wife Vicenta Puzul Gonzalez to help him. She became the first Tzutujil woman painter and over time has established herself as an accomplished artist in her own right. Vicenta paints regularly and her work has developed a following all its own.

Mission San Pedro is fortunate to have partnered with these two artists who are committed to helping those most in need in their community and especially the widows of San Pedro. They gather at the Gonzalez Chavajay home twice a month to receive a distribution of food and to pray for those who help support them.

Every purchase of a painting by Mariano Gonzalez Chavajay or Vicenta Puzul Gonzalez through MissionSanPedro provides direct financial support to help the widows and others in need in San Pedro la Laguna.
